Getting some fresh air, having a picnic or reading a book in the shade of a tree sounds like good summer programs. We discovered 5 gardens and parks in Lisbon that will refresh and inspire you.

Whether it's to freshen up your ideas, seeing the sights or taking a walk in the company of Mother Nature, here are some suggestions.

Gulbenkian Gardens, São Sebastião

It's hard to pass by here without coming across stone paths, turtles or colorful birds. An attraction for adults and children alike, the Gulbenkian Gardens are among the most iconic in the city. And that says Gonçalo Ribeiro Telles, the landscape architect who designed this attractive green space.

In this place, the shadows invite you to read a good book. Nature, on the other hand, invites you to discover more than 230 species of flora and to do bird watching.

Whatever your preference, there is no way to refuse the invitation to visit these gardens!

Discover them here.

Jardim do Torel, Avenida da Liberdade

After being renovated in 2020, Jardim do Torel gained beauty, poetry and aromatic plants.

With the planning of the landscape architect Raquel Alho, the intervention promoted by the Parish Council of Santo António gave a new life to this piece of nature, located on one of the seven hills of Lisbon .

In addition to spaces for visitors to sit on the grass, surrounded by flower beds with plants such as lavender and verbena, each of the benches “declaims” poems by Ary dos Santos, Fernando Pessoa or by the lyricist João Monk.

The artificial lake is also worth a visit. But no less than the outdoor gym, all of it
freshly painted. Discover this garden here.

Lisbon Botanical Garden, Príncipe Real

It has more than 140 years of history, an amphitheater, new benches and a setting that combines the tropical with the urban. In the Botanical Garden it is easy to forget that we are in the heart of the center of Lisbon.

The enormous diversity of plants that live here transports us to a faraway destination, to an adventure in the jungle. Maybe that's why it's almost impossible to leave this place without first doing a photo session.

Palm trees, coming from all continents, are an ex-libris in this space. To them, join the cycads, authentic living fossils of enormous rarity.

The environmental education programs, for different age groups and with guided thematic visits,
are one more reason to visit this garden, classified as a national monument. Discover it here.

Parque Ribeirinho Oriente, Marvila

Among 360 planted trees, once we arrive here we are faced with two pedestrian paths: one along the riverside and the other surrounded by green views.

Occupying an area of about four hectares in the Braça de Prata area, next to the River Tagus, the Ribeirinho Oriente Park offers us five sculptures which, in addition to beautifying the landscape and project cool shadows, they also work as a sundial.

Ideal for children to play, ride a bike or even read in the small library that exists here, this space is the promise of afternoons well spent with families.

There is, of course, no shortage of comfortable lounge chairs to contemplate the surrounding scenery. Find out more here.

Monsanto Forest Park

Imagine 900 football fields together. It seems difficult? It's not if you come to Parque Florestal de Monsanto.

With plenty of room to walk, run, bike, rollerblade or skate, Parque Florestal de Monsanto offers relaxing views over the river and city.

For picnics, there's nothing better than laying out your towel in the middle of the woods and listening to the birds singing.

Between the picnic area of Alameda Keil do Amaral, the garden at the Montes Claros viewpoint, Moinho do Penedo and Mata de Benfica, there are many options available to explore this green lung of Lisbon. Let yourself be inspired here.
