Book lover? The Lisbon Book Fair is back!

The history of the Book Fair is as rich as the pages of the books found there. From its beginnings to the present day, the path of this literary celebration is marked by moments of transformation and growth.
It all started in 1906, in the famous book market at Feira de Agosto, located where the statue of the Marquês de Pombal now stands. Just like traditional Portuguese fairs, this exhibition was made up of food and drink stalls and entertainment tents (revel theater, shooting games and even mummers).
Until the end of the 1920s, this concept of “book market” remained and it was only in May 1930 that something new arrived in the city: Book Week, the event that later gave way to the famous Lisbon Book Fair. For 12 days, this celebration, with its 17 pavilions, captivated everyone who passed through Rossio Square. But was this the 1st Book Fair? Not yet.
Officially, the exhibition was inaugurated a year later, also in Rossio, by the President of the Republic at the time, Óscar Carmona. It had 19 wooden stalls, separated by potted palm trees, in front of the National Theatre. The enthusiasm was so great that it lasted more than 9 decades and allowed the fair to remain alive year after year (even during the COVID-19 pandemic).
Between Rossio, Avenida da Liberdade and Parque Eduardo VII, this unique event has been attracting visitors and is now in its 94th edition. Between May 29th and June 16th, 2024, it will once again be present on Lisbon's cultural agenda.
Under the welcoming shade of Parque Eduardo VII, more than an annual meeting, we will once again witness “a moment of exaltation in reading”, as highlighted by Pedro Sobral, president of the Portuguese Association of Publishers and Booksellers (APEL).
With a relaxed atmosphere and accessible to everyone, here you will also discover between 20 and 30 new pavilions, with a wide selection of books at affordable prices (from the best-sellers of the moment to the hidden treasures of the editorial fund), a variety of activities and amenities (including a baby changing station) and even a space dedicated to pets.
Do you need more reasons to participate in one of the most anticipated cultural events in the city? What if we told you that you are just a 7-minute walk from our 4-star hotel in Lisbon?
With a privileged location in the heart of Avenida da Liberdade and an excellent service for over 20 years, the Hotel Marquês de Pombal offers you the experience of all of Lisbon in a hotel, close to Parque Eduardo VII and next to the Feira do Livro de Lisboa.
