Journey through the history of Avenida da Liberdade
März 01 2024
Culturele Een bezoek aan Lissabon
Today, let's go back in time. We travel back to 145 years ago, when one of Lisbon's most emblematic icons was born: Avenida da Liberdade. In fact, we can go back to 1764, after the Lisbon earthquake, when the famous Passeio Público was created, which was the origin of this avenue.
The Passeio Público was a picturesque garden, embellished by a large waterfall. Designed by the architects of Marquês de Pombal, it began to be frequented by members of high society.
Later, it became a meeting point for all social classes.
In the 1930s, this green space no longer met the city's needs and, in 1835, a renovation process began. Over time, the Public Promenade was expanded. It thus became an entertainment center, with opera shows and cultural events that captivated Lisbon residents at the time.
Among other changes, the promenade was expanded and lakes were created, decorated with statues representing the Tagus River and the Douro River. Even today you can find these statues decorating the avenue.
As the city expanded to the north, the need for a connection between the old and new areas arose. As such, the Avenida da Liberdade project began to take shape. Even despite the initial resistance of the population, who lamented the loss of their beloved Passeio Público.
Finally, in 1886, Avenida da Liberdade was inaugurated, following the layout of engineer Ressano Garcia. Inspired by the Champs-Elysées in Paris, this avenue brought new life to the city with a wide boulevard, majestic trees and the elegance of the Portuguese sidewalk. Therefore, it gained an atmosphere of sophistication and glamor similar to that found on the famous Parisian avenue - Les Champs-Elysées.
Over the years, Avenida da Liberdade was enriched with several statues and emblematic buildings, such as the headquarters of Diário de Notícias, the Cineteatro Éden and the Tivoli Theater. Destination for luxury shopping in Lisbon, in stores such as Prada, Gucci or Louis Vuitton, the wide and elegant avenue has also been the stage for parties and parades, such as the Marchas Populares on the eve of Saint Anthony, from the 12th to the 13th of June.
With statues in honor of numerous Portuguese writers, such as: Alexandre Herculano, Almeida Garrett and António Feliciano de Castilho, Parque Eduardo VII is also worth a visit, whose view extends from the top of the avenue to the Tagus. Furthermore, it gains a special charm with luxury shops, elegant boutiques, charming cafes and imposing hotels, such as the Hotel Marquês de Pombal.
Located in the heart of the city, this hotel on Avenida da Liberdade is a symbol of comfort and elegance.
