The month of March offers a variety of unmissable exhibitions in Lisbon. In this article, we'll highlight some of our favourites, which allow you to appreciate diverse art forms that invite reflection and stimulate the senses while enjoying the city.
Art Expo Lisbon 2025
Dates: March 7-9, 2025
Location: Cordoaria Nacional
Created to promote contemporary art in Portugal and Spain, Art Expo Lisbon returns with more than 180 galleries and artists, presenting works of painting, sculpture, drawing, photography and video. The event includes live performances and immersive experiences. And admission is free.
How to get there, from Marquês de Pombal Square:
- By metro and bus: Take the metro Blue Line (direction Santa Apolónia) to Terreiro do Paço station. Then take bus 728 (direction Restelo) and get off at the "Cordoaria Nacional" stop.
- By cab or car: The journey takes about 15 minutes, depending on traffic.
Exhibition "Exoticisms - Rethinking the Near Past"
Dates: Until March 20, 2025
Location: Casa do Jardim da Estrela - Um Teatro em Cada Bairro
This exhibition by Vasco Araújo features sculptures that explore our relationship with what we consider exotic, questioning definitions of civilization and the perception of what is considered different or distant.
How to get there, from Marquês de Pombal Square
- By bus: Take bus 709 (towards Campo de Ourique) and get off at the "Basílica da Estrela" stop.
- On foot: A walk of around 30 minutes, passing through Rato and following Rua de São Bento.
Exhibition "31 Women. An Exhibition by Peggy Guggenheim"
Dates: From February until June 2025
Location: Museum of Contemporary Art (MAC) of the Centro Cultural de Belém (CCB)
This exhibition celebrates the legacy of Peggy Guggenheim, presenting works by 31 female artists who have marked the world of art.
Distance from Marquês de Pombal Square: approximately 7 km
How to get there:
- By train: Take the metro to Cais do Sodré station (Green Linee) and then the Linha de Cascais train, getting off at "Belém" station. The CCB is a short walk away.
- By bus: Take bus 727 (direction Restelo) directly from Marquês de Pombal Square and get off at the "Centro Cultural de Belém" stop.
Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation Modern Art Centre
Reopened in September 2024, the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation Modern Art Centre reopened after a significant renovation, which included expanding the exhibition areas by 900 square meters.
The new building, reinvented by Japanese architect Kengo Kuma, in collaboration with landscape architect Vladimir Djurovic, aims to integrate architecture and nature, in a space open to both presentations of the FCG Collection and temporary exhibitions by emerging and established artists. It also has a new restaurant.
